Titanium Titties: What you need to know about nipple piercings

Love them, hate them or secretly want them – nipple piercings are taking the world by storm and following #freethenipple, who wouldn’t want nips that are adorned with jewellery?

I’m a recent convert to the pierced nipple trend. I have always loved how they looked but the idea of someone pushing a needle through my nipple made me feel weak in the knees – and not in the good way.

Nipple piercings have grabbed the attention of everyone. Following the body confidence movement and celebrity endorsement of stars such as Rhianna, Kylie Jenner and Bella Hadid, nipple piercing rates skyrocketed – and why wouldn’t they? They look great and can really boost self-confidence! I know after getting mine done my self-esteem was at an all time high.

Do nipple piercings hurt?

Objectively? Yes. A needle through any part of the body isn’t going to be the most comfortable but for some people, the sensitivity of the area can make the experience a more painful one.

From my own experience, it honestly wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be (I know everyone says that but I genuinely mean it) – it was quick and my piercer, Louise, made me feel very relaxed. She asked me to breathe in, and by the time I had finished breathing out, the piercing was done. Just like that – sad bitch to bad bitch in 0.2 seconds.

I will say, however, that the second one hurt more than the first. This can be explained by the drop in adrenaline following the first piercing. All the build-up, anxiety and preparation heighten your adrenaline levels and after the ‘danger’ (the piercing) is over your ‘fight or flight’ reaction settles and, as such, the pain is higher when the second piercing happens. Again though, it was pretty quick and definitely worth it for the results.

But the metal detectors!

I’ve seen so many myths around nipple piercings that it’s been hard to keep track. One of my favourites is that you must declare your piercings to airport security because the metal detectors will go off. This is categorically untrue, and while I admire the confidence to shout about your nips in the middle of an airport, you don’t have to if you don’t want to. Nipple piercings aren’t big enough to set off metal detectors, so you need not worry about them causing airport delays!

Another really common myth is that nipple piercings make your nips permanently hard. This just isn’t true. For the first few weeks, they might be swollen but this will go down over time. They will still be more noticeable under shirts, though, as the piercings will sit against clothing. Also, nipple piercings can make nipples more sensitive and therefore they’ll get hard easier – so that’s a bonus too!

Someone also told me that bigger boobs hurt more than smaller boobs but this is absolutely a myth. Firstly, pain is subjective. Some people will find them to be very painful and other people will rate the pain as being much less. Secondly, not everyone who gets their nips pierced has boobs, so this myth categorically cannot be true.

“Don’t wear a bra! It’ll be too painful” – I heard this approximately fifteen minutes before I got mine pierced. This definitely is not the case. Bras help to protect your nipples from catching on clothing or pulling and I found that a bra with extra padding helped to protect them from additional pressure, such as someone hugging me or a seatbelt rubbing.

Healing process

Like all piercings, nipple piercings have a long healing time. They take approximately six months to a year to heal and even after this time, they will close over very quickly if the jewellery is removed.

The best healing process is to leave them alone. This is hard when they look good and human temptation has us out here wanting to play with them but leaving them be and cleaning them once a day with a saltwater solution is the best way to help your new piercing settle.

They can do wonders for your sex life

Honestly, one of the biggest pros in getting my nipples pierced was the benefits they had to my sex life. I had been feeling really low on confidence and just didn’t feel as sexy as I used to feel in the bedroom. The difference that having my nipples pierced made to my self-esteem was unbelievable. That boost came through in the sex I was having, I suddenly felt more confident and comfortable in my body, which made sex so much more enjoyable.

There are also lots of fun things you can do with pierced nipples! For those who like rough sex, they work as something new to pull at and squeeze whereas for others, the sensitivity can add new sensations to foreplay & denial.

Nipple play is a sex act that is often forgotten about, despite nipples being a grounding factor between all humans. We’re all born with them, no matter how we identify! Nobody’s nipples are the same but for many people, nipples are an erogenous zone. Nipple piercings or not – the following are some good basics for nipple play:

  1. Kissing/licking: one of the most common and, in my opinion, enjoyable ways to play with nipples! You don’t need anything other than a consenting partner, some nipples and a tongue so that makes this a low fuss and low-cost way to turn a partner on – if that’s what they’re into.

  2. Sucking: this can again be done with a mouth but also you could use a nipple sucker which you squeeze and release over the nipple to create a vacuum that when removed can increase nipple size and sensitivity: win-win!

  3. Biting: now, not for everyone, biting can add new sensations into the bedroom and create more intense sensations!

  4. Squeezing/pinching/clamping: another fun way to play with nipples! Clamping especially causes a little bit of pain but there are beginner clamps which can be an easy introduction into painless pinching!

To pierce or not to pierce:

Piercings take money, time and patience. My nipple piercings are one of the best piercings I’ve got but I’m well aware they’re not for everyone. The friend I got mine done with took hers out within two weeks of having them pierced because they were just not for her. It’s all a personal choice.

If pierced nips are for you then great! If not, then that’s okay too. My advice is – do your research, find a reputable piercer and free those nips.
