Degas dancers gone wild: The mix media works of Claudio Parentela

Born in Catanzero, Italy, Claudio Parentela is an illustrator and painter. Using a variation of mediums from paint to collage, Parentela has been active for many years in the international contemporary art scene.

From covering Edgar Degas’ dancers with phallic imagery to slicing photos of models in two, Parentela experiments imaginatively with collage to present old images in a new light.

His common use of black paint against ripped up old magazines creates a stark contrast, warping the original meaning of the photograph. The magazine image becomes lost in the abyss and what we are left with are questions.

Why does this model now have a green splodge of paint protruding from their head instead of the facial features that were once there? And why are the famous Edgar Degas dancers now plastered with phallic images that dramatically contrast the perfection of the dancer’s petticoats in a strange but beautiful way?

Parentela’s pieces are full of surprises and you never tire engulfing yourself in each piece as with every exposure, a new element of the work takes hold.
